Some observations from the professionals at MobileREMEDIES®
You are planning to buy a new iPhone and upgrade your old 16GB iPhone 6. You go to the Apple store and find that the iPhone 7 comes in different storage sizes from 32Gb to 256GB and then you have to decide how much memory is cost effective for your individual needs.
The decision is an important one because if you choose too little storage, in a few weeks or months, you’ll miss out on that great picture or video and your phone will begin to run more slowly. If you just go all out and get the maximum storage you will perhaps be paying extra for something you don’t need.
The professionals at MobileREMEDIES® iPhone repair service would like to help you to make an informed decision about which device to buy. Here are some of the factors you need to consider!
The Photographer in you!
Your new iPhone 7’s camera gathers a lot of data very rapidly, better than any previous iPhone. With 12 megapixel images and 4K video it doesn’t take long to use a gigabyte of storage! This means that your habits as a photographer may be one of the most important considerations you have in choosing your new device. The more you like pictures and videos the more storage you need!
The Price of onboard storage
Most electronic products are offered with a basic or budget version, a standard model, and a premium version. Apple divides iPhones based on storage size and with more storage your device will cost more. Each memory increment adds $100 to your purchase price starting at $649 for the iPhone 7 and $769 for the iPhone 7 Plus. That means that the 256GB versions will set you back about a grand! If you are on a really tight budget but getting the features of the new iPhone are important to you then you should go ahead and choose the 32GB version and deal with any inconvenience that might be associated with it.
iCloud storage considerations
We have talked about iCloud Storage in previous articles. Just for buying your iPhone, Apple will include an extra 5GB of free storage that you can use for backups, photos and data. Your iTunes purchases including music and movies, do not use your data allocation. If your free account becomes full you are notified and have the option to purchase more iCloud storage. The good news is that Apple has just expanded their paid storage and reduced the price for the top tier. The first 50GB costs only $0.99 per month going to $9.99 for 2TB (down from $19.99!).
So, what does iCloud storage have to do with determining how much built-in memory you need? It means that IF you have good, fast, unlimited Internet access, you can use it easily and effectively to supplement your onboard storage. This works particularly for the 32GB version because you can more than double your storage (32GB+50GB) for about $12/year!
MobileREMEDIES® iPhone repair professionals remind us that using iCloud gives us the advantage of effortlessly integrating the data from all of our Apple devices however, if your iPhone is your only Apple device and you prefer other cloud storage systems, there is also built-in provider support for Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, and more.
The Apps you like
The apps you use frequently will influence your need for onboard storage. Demanding apps can either eat up storage with the size of the app itself or with the kind of data it saves and manipulates. Those apps that routinely use photos and videos will naturally consume much more storage space. This usually applies to all social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc.
Keep in mind that as Internet access becomes more and more widespread and the speeds and capacities of cloud systems continue to improve, internal storage in our individual devices will gradually lose importance and this discussion may become obsolete. Data manipulation can actually be done on the cloud servers rather than on our devices. In fact it is likely that our smartphones, iPads, TVs etc. will gradually become generic machines with simple basic circuitry that will allow them to serve as virtual computers using cloud resources!
More and more developers are processing data within the cloud and the apps are getting leaner and more data efficient but for the time being social media apps still use lots or resources and make significant demands on our iPhones.
If money is the main issue and you want the advantages of the iPhone 7 for the lowest possible price, buy the basic 32GB version. You may need to adjust your habits to get the best of your light storage but if you use it principally for text messaging, streaming videos (without downloading them) and surfing the web, you may never need extra storage. If you do find you’re running out of data, MobileREMEDIES® iPhone repair recommends storing older photos and videos on your computer or in the cloud.
If you often use social media, like to take some photos and a few videos, and can afford the extra $100, buy the 128GB version. You will still have to backup your data regularly but you will have a lot more space to work with before you will have to purge any data from the iPhone.
If you are constantly on Facebook or Snapchat and daily share photos and videos with friends through social media, go the whole way and buy the premium device with 256GB of onboard storage. It’s worth the extra $200 for your usage.
